'hence if supplies are short, petty economic crime increases'
ask any crime victim if what they experienced was petty and i would bet they would disagree.
in short can i make the correlation of your statement say, if we increase the supply of drugs, crime will decrease. is that a fair inference on my part? and if so do you believe this?
in short, i think we may all agree on this one, the problem is demand, not supply. my educated guess would conclude if we make drugs acceptable and part of our culture, demand would increase. i dont particularly see any socially redeeming value to drug use, it would be interesting to ask the same drug abusers you referred too what they think about legalization and the benefits thereof.
