ALCATEL AWARDED A 200 MFF CONTRACT FOR
THE SUPPLY OF DECT RADIO ACCESS
TECHNOLOGY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Paris, September 23, 1998 -- Alcatel has been awarded a
contract valued at 200 Million French Francs by Telkom, the
leading South African operator for the supply of Radio Access
technology in the new DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless
Telecommunications) band of 3.5 GHz.

Telkom has selected Alcatel through its South African
subsidiary Alcatel Altech Telecoms (AAT) following a tender
specifically launched to acquire the best Radio Access 3.5 GHz
technology. " Telkom will be the first user of this DECT band
in the world " said John Pitout AAT's Managing Director.

This contract reaffirms Telkom's commitment to DECT
technology and expands on a 1.20 billion French Francs DECT
tender awarded to Alcatel in 1997. It reinforces Alcatel as a
leading telecommunications supplier in South Africa, in the
African continent and in the world, said Laurent Verrecchia,
Alcatel's Access Systems Director for Africa.

Alcatel Radio solutions guarantee voice, data and Internet
services in rural, suburban and urban areas, for fixed or
low-mobility applications, with integrated Network
Management. They are fully supported by the vast Alcatel
experience as provide of the largest wireless networks
installed or committed worldwide.
