The company said it has been exchanging information with major Chinese universities and promoting joint research in W-CDMA technology, a next-generation mobile phone format. DoCoMo is investing aggressively in overseas cell phone carriers in a drive to expand its business globally. It took a 19 percent stake in Hong Kong's Hutchison Telephone Co Ltd in December 1999. Japanese media reported in May that DoCoMo is also in talks with South Korea's biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom about taking a 10 to 20 percent stake.
