>> NTT DoCoMo Seeks Ties With China Mobile Operators

27 June 2000

NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan's dominant mobile phone service operator, said on Tuesday it aims to boost its operations in China and establish cooperative ties with Chinese mobile communications operators.

The company declined to disclose the names of any prospective Chinese partners.

NTT DoCoMo said in a statement it opened a representative office in Beijing on Tuesday to strengthen ties with local wireless operators and other telecommunications-related entities.

The company said it has been exchanging information with major Chinese universities and promoting joint research in W-CDMA technology, a next-generation mobile phone format.

DoCoMo is investing aggressively in overseas cell phone carriers in a drive to expand its business globally. It took a 19 percent stake in Hong Kong's Hutchison Telephone Co Ltd in December 1999.

Japanese media reported in May that DoCoMo is also in talks with South Korea's biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom about taking a 10 to 20 percent stake.

DoCoMo's shares closed at 3.02 million yen on Tuesday, up 4.14 percent, as Japanese technology stocks drew strength from gains on the U.S. Nasdaq market overnight.
