WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - The Bar code technology firm Symbol Technologies Inc. (nyse: SBL - news - people) said on Tuesday the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the timing and amount of revenue it recognized from January 2000 to December 2001.

The Holtsville, New York-based company said it has handed over documents and is cooperating with the probe, which it disclosed in a quarterly report filed with the SEC.

The company has also launched its own investigation with the help of an outside law firm and an independent accounting firm. That investigation is expected to be completed in the fall of 2002, Symbol said in the filing.

A spokesman for the company did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Symbol's shares were down 5 cents to $9 in pre-afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
