Pecking order, yes. But name calling (and brutality) is not a requisite component of that. If you have any interest in this, I suggest you check out some of the innovative programs that deal with the culture of bullying. I am sure that schools that deal with bullying still have popular kids, and shy kids, and kids who are loners- but what they don't have is the level of physical or emotional threat hanging in the air, that other schools have. I guess what I am trying to get across to you, is that your post appears to be confusing (imo) a number of issues- that can be easily separated.
