IMO, the issues with intelligent design are overblown. There are a lot of versions of intelligent design, but obviously Perry is smart enough to know that his faith cannot contradict science if he wants to be taken seriously.

The thing with the theory of evolution is that everyone forgets where the "theory" part comes in. Evolution is real. That's not the theory part. The theory part comes with the driving mechanism.

Did the spark of life happen by pure chance?
or
Did the spark of life happen from an intelligent force?
Did the intelligent force simply start the ball rolling and allow natural selection to take over?
or
Did the intelligent force start the ball rolling and define the path?

None of the intelligent force stuff can be disproven, therefore cannot be considered science. But nor can the idea of the spark of life happening by chance be disproven (or proven). Therefore it is outside the realm of science.

So as long as Perry's views do not contradict science, I don't think it is fair to say that he doesn't believe in science.

I personally would prefer that Perry not take a stand on gay marriage or prayer in public schools or abortion. Those are things that I consider to be rooted in his spiritual beliefs.

If he stays focused on the 10th amendment and if he can articulate why this is beneficial for everyone, I think he will be a good candidate and a good president.
