Allen, your comment in posting 346, "This is the first reference I have seen for putting an i960RP on a desk-top PC rather than a server.", sent me back to relook at my posting 338. I discovered that I had left something important out of that posting (probably not my only oversight). Ron Abelmann told me that Intel will be shipping the i960 chip in all Pentium Pro servers within six months and in ALL Pentium Pro motherboards within one year. At that time I would expect this to mean all motherboards. Great news!

Another point worth mentioning from the Monterey conference is that I did an informal survey. Both I and a friend who has a large position in WIND made a point of asking each of the analysts whom we met during the four days what they thought of Wind River Systems. Surprisingly to me, many of these analysts who cover technology were not even aware of the company and those that had some knowledge were either hazy about what the company does or dismissed it as an expensive high flyer. This seems to be consistent with your experience at the H and Q conference this Spring where embedded processing was hardly mentioned. This technology sector has an exceedingly low profile, probably because of the dearth of shares available for purchase and the consequent low coverage. I take that as a positive. With a little luck this will remain a backwater for a few more years while the current participants, particularly WIND, lock up the customer base.
