In answer to your comment #2, I know from my June 96 Byte magazine article on hard drives that MR is CURRENTLY more expensive for less "bang". It's better than inductive and other heads, but not better enough to justify the costs... yet. The reason IBM and, until recently, H-P used MR (I believe IBM uses it exclusively) is because they believe inductive heads in particular days are numbered, maybe 2, maybe 3 years, until MR is overwhelmingly better in cost/performance. Yet so far inductive and other non MR heads have pushed the envelope enough to stay ahead of the game. My excitement is due to fact that KM should give inductive, tri-pad and contact heads a 40% quantum leap ahead, bam, just like that.
