I dont know if anyone making money on Wintel workstations. This year so far it is my understanding that only 50000 Wintel workststations have been sold out of 850000. Sun alone is the leader with about 170000 and SGI pops in with about 40000. However, Dataquest a firm that keeps track of facts and figures in the computer business and also predicts trends indicates workstation to be a booming area in future and predicts by year 2000 6.5 million workstations will be sold and Wintel will account for 5 million. Check info in WSJ, October 29, 1996 page B4. I aint makin these numbers up. If they are correct SGI better broaden their horizons so as to start rakin in the cash. I know that technically they cant be beat howver, have some doubts about management and their foresight. As i see it, all the technical expertise in the world aint worth a hoot unless its channeled towards something people want to buy. It one thing to say build it and they will come, but to me its better to say they want it and I will build it.
