One relationship between IBM and VECO is that IBM developed and manufactures the Atom Force Microscope which VECO resells. Now VECO has purchased Digital instruments which also makes its own AFMs, so I don't know how that will affect that relationship. AFMs are used as research tools in a variety of applications, and are now being used for disk head manufacturing: biz.yahoo.com Another relationship between IBM and VECO is that I believe they do some joint research in the disk area. I presume that IBM specifies what they are looking for in a tool, and VECO works at meeting those specifications. Carl
