Nasdaq pulled lower by Microsoft selloff

NEW YORK, Oct 20 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq quickly fell off the day's highs after news that U.S. Justice Department
said Microsoft was in contempt for breaking an antitrust pact.

''Microsoft trading is wild right now,'' said Jay Meagrow, institutional trader at McDonald & Co.

Microsoft Corp (MSFT) had been up some two points for much of the day before falling on the U.S. Justice
announcement. The world's biggest software maker, due to report earnings after the close, was off 3-1/4 at 129.

The Nasdaq shed six points and as up 10.48 at 1677.33.

The Dow was up 17.68 points at 7864.71.

Microsoft's tumble was not pulling others lower, Meagrow said.

Rival Internet browser maker Netscape Corp (NSCP), however, surged 6-3/16 to 41-1/8.

U.S. Justice has asked a federal court to impose a $1 million a day fine on Microsoft if the alleged violations continue.
