I read a lot of debate about the merits of the PC versus the NC. I'm sure that some enviornments will always need PC's and others will be suitable for NCs. Where I see NC's to have a place is in the replacement of 'dumb terminals' connected to large mainframes. Oracle applications have always had some serious drawbacks when the database and tools are running on a mainframe processor and the users accessed it via 'dumb' 3270 type devices. Don't laugh, plenty of govt. installations and large corporations still have such configurations. With NC's replacing the dumb terminals for a fraction of the cost of a PC, it opens up a new arena for Oracle database applications. It give the users a GUI interface to there server where they previously had a block mode device. There are many situations out there in the real world where people don't need the power and capabilities of a PC, they just need a windows termninal. Compare the cost of replacing a few thousand dumd terminals with NCs as opposed to PCs. I think NC's will mark the long overdue end of dumd terminals. And I realize that many of the people that read this will already think that era had died. Well, anyone who works in a large govt. bureaucracy knows it hasn't. It will all be very interesting to watch this scene unfold.
