This guy was in Yale and he was anti-war but volunteered for a combat role, killed people and saw people being killed but still was anti-war. Weird.

Not weird. Totally to be expected. Look at his goal. He knew as a kid he wanted to be Prez. His hero was JFK. Be an officer, get into PT boats, and get medals. It was a well though out plan. He figured he needed the war record. he was right. His antiwar record would have kept him from any consideration for national office now if he had not done the war.
