For some idea of current incarnations of wireless phones as a ubiquitous access device, you may take a look at phone.com:

Also, a bit of browsing around using the keyword WAP (Wireless Applications Protocol, which Phone.com developed w/ Nok, Mot, and Ericy) might interest you. See the websites of those 4 also (I know it's blasphemy for most here to even THINK of Ericsson and Nokia, so you'll have to hold your nose<g>).

Interesting stuff though. Astro, Elroy, George, Jane, and Judy would be proud.
