No - I wasn't booting from the drive, merely had it installed for transferring some files. It's one of those 256K Jump drives. Apparently, I had forgotten that I still had it in the USB port when I did a system restore. In any event, the next time I went to do a system restore, all the checkpoints were gone.

I'm not sure of all this but I can't think of any other explanation for the disappearing checkpoints for system restore. It appears that Win attempts to find space on each drive to set up a checkpoint and if there is not enough space it wipes out all checkpoints on all drives.

I may wrong about this and I did see some reference in the MSFT knowledgebase but it was a bit above me.

So - if anyone can tell me if this is correct or not, I'd appreciate it and, if correct, is there a way to permanently prevent system restore from monitoring this portable drive without turning it off in general. I know I can do it each time I plug it in but I tend to do this on the fly and forget that type of thing. Age you know comes wisdom I suppose and I'm waiting for some to come my way.

Thanks again.
