Applied Materials Sees Q3 Orders Over $3 Billion
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) - Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news) said on Wednesday it expects fiscal third-quarter earnings per share to be higher than analysts' expectations, and that orders for its chip making equipment will rise from the second quarter and should exceed $3 billion.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company also expects third-quarter sales of $2.6 billion to $2.7 billion, Chief Financial Officer Joseph Bronson said on a conference call following the report of its fiscal second-quarter results.
Applied expects third-quarter earnings per share of $0.64 to $0.68 cents, slightly more than the 62 cents a share analysts expect for the third quarter, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Reflecting the strength of the global semiconductor market, Applied now expects the wafer fabrication market to rise 56 percent in 2000 from 1999, more than the 46 percent it expected just three months ago.

Bronson said he expects orders will remain ``robust'' for the remainder of the fiscal year, and added that he expects supplies of DRAM chips to tighten in the second half of 2000.

Bronson also said the company expects third quarter gross margin to be 50 percent or slightly more
