Question on versions of XP -

I'm going to migrate a couple of Win 98 machines to XP and reformat the drives.

Is there an advantage to buying a complete XP vs. the upgrade? I remember reading some posts where people were having problems with upgrades to XP. I'm going to reformat so I'm hoping that this should minimize problem area interaction with other programs.

Also can someone fill me in on the versions that are sold online that claim to be full installation product but are OEM versions. They state they are fully licensed. I assume they come up with some fiction to claim that they are selling you a computer part of something. Are they legal (maybe Kosher per MSFT is a better term)? Is there a disadvantage to buying them? They sell for about the same price as an upgrade at a local store.

I was guessing that there was an advantage to buying non-OEM because one would get MSFT support. However, after looking at the MSFT site, it appears that once installation is complete, one gets minimal support. I think it's 2 "incidents" which they define very strangely and then it's pay per view.

Finally on Home Edition vs. XP Pro. I have machines with each and, despite the MSFT claims, I don't see any real benefit to PRO. The system restore seems to be about the same. Encryption is probably handled better by 3d party program. The remote desktop is probably better handled by laplink or something like that.

I don't have major network issues as I tend to use the NIKE network (grab the sneakers and run to the next room.)

Any comments would be appreciated? TIA.
