"When the Balfour Declaration was
issued there were 58,000 Jews in Palestine and
400,000 Arabs," he says, describing the growth
in the Jewish community until World War II,
when the British issued the White Paper
limiting Jewish immigration. Sharon knows by
heart the number of Jews in Palestine in any
given period, from the Turkish times to the
establishment of the state.

"The White Paper decided the fate of the Jews,"
Sharon says, and talks about the closing of the
gates of Palestine during the Holocaust. He
holds forth on the events that preceded the
issuing of the White Paper: "The hardest year
was 1938 when 250 Jews were murdered in six
months. There were months when 40 to 60 Jews
were murdered. [The White Paper] was issued to
appease the Palestinians."
