Gateway had been using the Mpact chip, which is a "media processor" that operated as both the graphics chip and the MPEG-2 decoder. Apparently, Gateway had problems with the Mpact chip and it switched to a dedicated n-vidia graphics board and a separate MPEG-2 decoder board that plugs into a PCI slot in the computer.

Chromatics makes the Mpact chip, and it recently announced that it has abandoned its Mpact project (and chip) in favor of a different technology.

Let us know what decoder chip is in your new Gateway!
