I cant readily find it, but I saw a show many years ago about finding oil in abandoned fields. Supposedly the old theory was oil was in the ground like a water table, so when the well went dry, all the oil was gone. With newer imaging techniques, they're discovering oil is contained in pockets, with some even above and below each other.

Also the theories of inorganic crude oil from methane are interesting.
