I am just interested in social class stuff ~ and the parlour that nobody uses strikes me as an expression of a belief in, or aspiration to, a social class that is "better". The only family I knew well that had a parlour that nobody used had a not dissimilar social structure, the wife came from a wealthy family, and married a man without much money. Everyone in the family, children included, treated the husband with thinly veiled contempt, and they wound up divorcing, which was unusual for the time.

But I remember going to other houses when I was a kid, and seeing a room that was richly furnished, but off limits.
