HP Introduces Smart Card Security Kits for HP OmniBook Notebook PCs Running Microsoft Windows 2000
\266 HP Mobile ProtectTools 2000 Smart Card Security Kit Builds Upon Key Windows 2000 Operating System Security Features
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 2000-- Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP - news) today announced the availability of a new Smart Card kit for HP notebook PCs running Microsoft© Windows© 2000 that builds upon key security enhancements in the operating system to protect and authenticate sensitive user data. The HP Mobile ProtectTools 2000 Smart Card security kit -- an accessory for all HP OmniBook notebook PCs -- allows users to safeguard data in an encrypted, tamper-proof removable smart card.
HP OmniBook notebook PC owners use the smart card and a personal identification number (PIN) to log onto Windows 2000. The computer cannot be turned on if the smart card is not inserted. The kits have an estimated U.S. street price of $99(1) and are sold as accessories for all current HP OmniBook notebook PCs. The kit include a PC card, two smart cards, including a back-up card, and software. They can be purchased directly from HP, or from HP resellers, and can be installed within minutes.
``People are using notebooks more and more, and storing increasingly sensitive content on them,'' said Bruce Encke, worldwide security manager for HP's Mobile Computing Division. ``The last thing users want is for someone else to be able to look at sensitive e-mail they are sending over the Internet for an e-commerce transaction.''
Two years ago, HP became the first computer company to offer smart card security for notebook PCs. The cards initially protected HP notebooks from unauthorized log-on, a deterrent to theft, and encrypted data on the notebook's hard drive. Microsoft Windows 2000 can securely encrypt any data on the hard drive. Encrypted data can be sent to another user and authenticated through the most important new feature of HP's new-generation smart card: the ability to store and protect a user's digital certificate for secure e-business transactions.
Earlier this year, in a move that strengthened HP's position as a manufacturer of unusually secure personal computers, HP introduced the HP Vectra VL600 PC, the first corporate PC to provide a highly manageable, integrated security solution at the user level. Equipped with the HP ProtectTools 2000 Smart Card security kit and other leading-edge tools, the HP Vectra VL600 allows users to protect data transmitted during online commerce through user authentication, secure communications and secure transaction capabilities.
