Barry, I got off an Intel web page that the 166 MHz Pentium is 197.5 SPECint92, and the Pentium Pro 200 is 320.2 (didn't have the Pentium 200). The Merced at 2000 should be about 10 times the Pentium 166 and about 6+ times the Pentium Pro 200 MHZ. This translates into pure processing power gains, of which HP, as a workstation/server manufacturer, wants all they can get. It's interesting to me that HP is putting all their eggs into the Intel basket after 1997 (at least for servers). What are servers used for?...Internet, Intranet applications will probably use the most servers. You know about the explosive growth in Internet and Intranet. Should get a lot of revenue for Intel at the high end, assuming HP can move the box sales. Also, a lot of other manufacturers of workstations, servers, PC's should be attracted to Merced. Just another new development to keep things moving for your INTC stock.

Another thought...there are very few companies around anymore who can afford the hundreds of millions (billions?) of development cost for one of these super chips. IBM and HP (with Intel) can. The top Japanese companies can. Sun Micro? I don't know.

Tony
