There is no real reason to expect oil prices to drop significantly, and every reason to expect them to go up.

Bringing Iraq oil supply on line could have kept things going for another decade, as their increased supply could have matched rising demand, but that's only postponement of the inevitable.

The ideal time to start was 25 years ago.

25 years ago was the time to accelerate nuclear power, and now would have been a good time to take advantage of cheap electricity / hydrogen to replace oil. You can't do one without the other - well, not unless you have another way of coming up with some terawatt of power in a hurry ...
