And natural gas produces less CO2. The coal produces a lot, but it would be hard to replace.


Actually, coal is the easiest to replace with nuclear, and so is gas (speaking of power generation).

And if gas is to be used, it can be liquified to be used in transportation, or it can continue to be used for heating. Oil and gas are "precious" energy resources, and it is not a good idea for them to be squandered on power generation.
