He has to try to steal it. Odds were that even if Trump was as stellar as his cultists at least claim they think he is, he likely would have lost the House. In pretty much every midterm going back to WWII, the party controlling the presidency loses at least a few members. When things are not great at all, then that is a wave election.

They are aware of that. Their solution of redistricting shows a detachment from reality, though. The red states are all pretty much gerrymandered to the hilt. Trying to squeeze out more Republican wins means they have to reduce the margin of error, making elections riskier even in the best of times. And these aren't those times.

His only hope, short of calling off the elections, is to issue a flurry of executive orders establishing control over elections. Then try to tie up any Democratic wins in court or even have the results thrown out in the interest of "election integrity". That there is no legal basis to do so shouldn't be any impediment, Trump has a history by now.
