Interesting, Sue. Etymology interests me. I assumed it was a derivative of 'cheerio', the English expression, and thought it had a much longer history.

'Cheerio' came into use in 1910, and 'cheers', the toast, in 1919, just after WWI. I think you're right, it carries a whole 'stiff upper lip' connotation that would fit very nicely in these trying circumstances.
