" IBM and Novell Sign Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement
Business Editors THORNWOOD, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1997--IBM and Novell have signed a patent cross-licensing agreement, which also provides a release to Novell for past use of IBM patents in the WordPerfect(a) word processing software. The agreement covers a broad range of patented inventions used in a variety of products. This is the 52nd intellectual property agreement IBM has entered into with other software companies this year. "We believe recognition of intellectual property rights as they apply to both hardware and software products is significant, as IBM seeks to protect its patented inventions and receive consideration when others use them," said Marshall Phelps, Jr., IBM vice president of intellectual property and licensing. "IBM invests significant amounts of its time and resources in the research and development of new software inventions. While we believe it is advantageous to the industry and our customers for IBM to make these inventions available through license agreements, we also have a responsibility to protect our investment by enforcing our patents." Specific terms of the agreement, including the amount paid to IBM and the specific products covered, are confidential. "
