PC-WEEK: Robert Frankenberg's resignation last month as chairman, president and CEO of Novell continues, indeed escalates, uncertainty about the future of the company.

Now under the leadership of Joe Marengi as
president and John Young as chairman of the
board, observers say Novell needs to start
delivering on product promises and moving the
company more quickly into the age of the
Internet.

Signs of trouble were there: Several high-level
resignations earlier this summer, and plunging
sales and earnings.

During the third quarter, Novell's sales declined to $365 million from $538 million in the year-ago period. Net income plunged to $59 million from $102 million in the quarter, with earnings per share dropping from 27 cents to 17 cents.
