Right, Suntrust charges the merchant a fee whether the transaction is debit or credit, but it can't be significantly more expensive to the retailers than the use of paper checks. Maybe less expensive since the funds can't be withdrawn unless they're in the account, whereas kiting checks is all too easy, and bad checks are either uncollectable or take a lot of time and effort to collect.

A lot of the smaller merchants around here set up ATM kiosks, take cash only, and collect whatever the ATM companies pay for the placement. Ethnic fast food joints mostly like Chinese restaurants and Peruvian chicken joints. Maybe convenience stores, too, but I don't go to convenience stores often so this recollection is vague.
