September 13, 1996 6:00 PM ET Corel to overhaul software
suite pricing
By Margaret Kane

In a move that would sharply reduce the price of its software,
Corel Corp. will charge companies that buy its office suite by
the number of Windows NT 4.0 servers running the suite rather
than by the number of PC users of the software.

That pricing change could cut costs by a factor of 10 for
companies and put the price for Corel's WordPerfect Office
suite significantly below that of Microsoft Office, the
unquestioned leader in the office suite market.

The plan calls for companies to pay $895 for each NT server.
Currently, Corel charges $365 per seat for its Office
Professional for Windows suite.

A company spokesperson, who asked to remain anonymous,
said the company was trying to attract businesses by simplifying
accounting procedures.

"The reason we're doing it this way is to make as big an impact
as we can with Office Professional," the spokesperson said. "It
doesn't complicate things by people having to count all their
employees, or add people on when they get hired."

The plan would significantly reduce Corel's profit per account,
although the spokesperson said the company hoped to make
up the difference in increased volume.
