People making arguments along the general lines that you have made, have also made statements like "the Iraqis all hate us", or "the Iraqis consider us evil", without being facetious. I guess its hard to tell when your are being facetious, so I treat your statement seriously unless their obviously a joke.

Also even facetious statements and jokes can have a point, so just because a statement is not made totally seriously doesn't mean it should never get a serious response.
