Appliance OS is about speed
Indeed. Also reliability. BeOS is very fast, boots faster than any other OS I've tested (on x86 hardware), also optimized for multi-media I/O performance (which they demoed to me and is quite good). Has other issues, e.g. no Java VM, applications are iffy, uphill push versus alternatives such as TV-based game machines moving upmarket. Re. the rumor itself, no obvious synergy with Linux, either. Jobs probably just didn't like the UI, which is, well, "different". Net net we agree, it's a dark horse at best.
