TOKYO, Sept. 1 (Kyodo) -- [ Hitachi Ltd. ] on Tuesday disclosed an outline of what it calls a "home multimedia station" under development jointly with [ Microsoft Corp. ] of the United States.

The equipment looks like a video cassette player deck and blends the functions of television and personal computers.

It can store in digital videodisks (DVDs), and play, various digital information fed via satellite broadcasting, digital camera or the Internet, Hitachi said.

Up to 80 minutes of moving pictures can be stored on a currently available DVD, while a new larger capacity type, which soon will be made available, should keep more than two hours of such data, according to Hitachi.

It will work on Microsoft's Windows CE operating software and Hitachi's Super H microprocessing unit.

Hitachi is planning to market the equipment, which will be able to play regular DVD software, by the end of 1999 at below 150,000 yen.
