Helped a friend yesterday get rid of the MSblast worm. His internet access was via a dial up modem and he couldn't complete any downloads because his computer was rebooting so often. His computer (XP) had no firewall, antivirus software and had no MS updates since it was purchased earlier this year. There is a way to prevent the reboots on XP.

(On XP) Right click "My Computer" and select "Manage". From the next menu select "Services and Applications" then "Services". A long list of "Services" will be shown. Select "Remote Procedure". There are two selections that show the name "Remote Procedure". Select the one that has a description "Provides the endpoint mapper and other miscellaneous RPC services".

Select the tab "Recovery". For all the failures (first, second and subsequent) select "Restart the service". Then click "OK". (After the MS update has been downloaded and the worm removed you'll need to come back to this point and set these back to "Restart the computer").

This will prevent the rebooting. Download the MS update first then the Symantec (or other) software to remove the worm. Otherwise the computer will become reinfected quickly.
