Now, the logic here . . . is simply overwhelming. It produces jobs. It will ultimately lower the price of world oil because it will increase supply.

All true, but this would also further decrease the interest in conservation and alternatives... and the time of eventual shortages would arrive when our reserves will be even lower.

Peak oil is another excessively politicized issue, like GW. So far, from what I see, none of the (conventional) domestic oil reserves would last for very long.
