<Interesting note though, there are many Marines in California, but few are recruited there.>

Familiarity breeds contempt has always been my perception that sailors are not liked in Navy towns and marines are not liked in marine towns.
I remember years ago a friend and
I took a break from San Diego and went up to someplace by Camp Pendleton. We were parked somewhere in the boonies or maybe a park drinking beer. The law pulled up got out of his car and as he walked over it was clear he was going to visit the wrath of God on our heads, or even take us in. As soon as he identified us as sailors rather than marines he turned into Mr sunshine. "hey boys, move on down the road and have a nice day."
