Government can only take away rights, not grant them.

The United States government was originally formed to secure the fundamental rights of citizens that were enumerated in the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights amendments to same. As far as I'm concerned, aside from defense of the country, that's the only legitimate function of any government..

That was the true meaning of Power to the People, as the Constitution put the limits of government in a tight box of constraint. Now, We the People are in the box, with power far too often being wielded by massive nanny state government, at all levels, against its own citizens.

I don't grant that these fundamental rights are a gift of either God or government, but are a necessary precondition for the formation and maintenance of a healthy, free and productive society peopled by civilized human beings.

Without rights being delineated and secured, civilization dies and society reverts to the law of the jungle..
