Let's see... Microsoft paid $150 million to Apple in order to get its browser on 8 million Apple desktops. That's about $20/user.

Now Justice is asking Microsoft for $250 million between now and the mid-1998 release of Windows 98 in order to put their browser in the 60 million PCs that will be sold in that time period. That's about $4/user.

$250M to own the entire Internet is not good deal. It's a GREAT DEAL!
Microsoft just had sales of $3.13 billion this quarter. This "fine" is something they can afford to laugh off. Basically, all it amounts to is a 2% tax surcharge on Microsoft's gross income. In fact, if I were Microsoft, I would be extremely pleased that such an insignificant hurdle were placed in the way of a bold, legally questionable licensing strategy to achieve total browser market control.

As someone said earlier, "Would you like that cash or check?"
