DVD-RAM for $799............. cdw.com LaCie's DVD-RAM drive combines CD, DVD and back-up capabilities in one storage peripheral at the same time. The DVD-RAM discs use similar technology as CD-ROM. It is a12 cm disc which can be read from or written to on DVD-RAM drives and read from new DVD-ROM drive (third generation only !). The DVD-RAM drive can read ALL existing 12 cm discs: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM. DVD-Video requires separate MPEG-2 decoder (hardware and/or software). The DVD-RAM media is not susceptible to magnetic fields. The drive writes and reads with an extreme accuracy with no physical contacts between the laser head and the media: no media damage problems ! DVD-RAM discs have a 50 years life at least. LaCie's CDC-RAM drive stores up to 5.2 GB on a 12cm disc (CD-ROM like), costing less than 5 cents per MB.
