all done. your words encouraged me to try again. i downloaded the newest version of w32.blaster.worm revoval tool. it ran all the way thru. i got the following message from symantec:
w32.blaster.worm has been successfully removed from your computer!

number of deleted files - 2
number of repaired files - 0
number of viral processes terminated -0
the number of registry entries fixed -0
( i had already manually removed the registry entry early on)
so i guess i am clean
i now have NAV running every night
i will check for IU
i have zone alarm
i have trojan hunter
i have a prophalyctic over my keyboard
i have two pit bulls that i only feed twice a week
i have atmospheric pressure in my house greater than the outside air
and the quivering mass of protoplasm in front of the monitor will never be negligent again.
