Detailed analysis of optical drive market, including quantities/year.
newsalert.com

<<CD-ROM drive manufacturers have been racing during the 1990's
to boost the transfer rate of the original CD-ROM drives, with
the result that product life cycles have been extremely short
during the last few years. However, with the industry's general
movement during the last year to "32X" drives, nominally 32 times
faster than the original CD-ROM, the speed race for CD-ROMs is
apparently over for most manufacturers. The next big transition
will be to DVD-ROM drives offering 4.7 gigabytes capacity, with
1998 the first big year of shipments for DVD-ROM drives,
estimated at 4.3 million drives. 2001 shipments of DVD-ROM drives
are projected at 79.7 million, passing shipments of CD-ROM drives
in that year, with only 46.1 million.>>
