However, with the industry's general movement during the last year to "32X" drives, nominally 32 times faster than the original CD-ROM, the speed race for CD-ROMs is apparently over for most manufacturers. The next big transition will be to DVD-ROM drives offering 4.7 gigabytes capacity, with 1998 the first big year of shipments for DVD-ROM drives, estimated at 4.3 million drives. 2001 shipments of DVD-ROM drives are projected at 79.7 million, passing shipments of CD-ROM drives in that year, with only 46.1 million.>>
