Of course you wouldn't want to go back to the Model T, but the implication was that we should easily be able to have cars with far greater gas mileage without giving up what people want with cars, considering that a car designed before my grand parents where born, can have as good of gas mileage as some modern vehicles, and possibly almost as good as the average vehicle. But since it had about as much power as a riding mower the point that a model T had mileage that isn't all that horrible compared to modern cars isn't a very important or interesting point. WWI fighters got better mileage than F-22s but who cares?
