Dolby Laboratories in the UK has announced that Australia's Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) selection panel recently named Dolby Digital the preferred audio format for multi-channel surround sound for Australia's new digital television system.

The report quoted Bruce Robertson, chairman of the Federation of Commercial Television Stations (FACTS) Specialist Group for DTTB in Australia as saying, "We believe using Dolby Digital audio encoding will help provide Australia with the best available HDTV (high definition television) service.

"The recommendation brings Australia into line with the US High Definition TV format which will allow for pricing advantages within this growing and evolving marketplace.''

Australia joins the US, Canada, and Taiwan in selecting Dolby Digital as the audio standard. A spokesman for FACTS said in an earlier report that the preference for Dolby Digital (AC3) was taken on the grounds of performance, the large population of audio products that exist within the community and the existing widespread licensing arrangements that are in place between Dolby and many manufacturers.

The preference for Dolby Digital did not preclude the use of other encoding formats. Dolby Digital is also available on laservideo disc and is the preferred audio format for multi-channel surround sound on both NTSC and PAL Digital Video Disc ( DVD ) systems including Australia (Region-4).
