That's those Japanese beetles. They were brought in as a biological control and got out of hand. They look like ladybugs but they bite. They are awful.

Visiting in Ohio, we were continually smelling something like cooking food in the bedroom. Turned out it was those Japanese beetles getting roasted in the ceiling lamp.
