To the best of my knowledge a VBIED has never been prevented from ramming home by a rear turret gunner although at least one died trying to stop one.

VBIED's are not the only form of attack.

Also even if the turret gunner is unlikely to take out the VBIED, that doesn't mean having one is a bad idea. One of the commenters at your link stated that without them you would have poor visibility (and thus be more vulnerable), whether or not that's true there is also the point that the attackers attack in such a way as to make the turret gunner less successful, which affects their tactical options. Remove the gunner, and perhaps they have an easier time setting up the attacks.
