DiviCom opens revenue door to cable operators
DiviCom Inc, a specialist in the area of digital TV compression, has introduced an interactive set-top box controller called InterSect, which it says will help cable operators differentiate themselves from Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) providers and create new revenue streams.
InterSect enables operators to deliver reliable TCP/IP traffic to client devices - which introduces the interactive applications Web browsing, e-mail, stock ticker and EPGs to cable audiences. DiviCom presents InterSect as the first DVB/DAVIC head end component designed to control DVB/DAVIC based set-top boxes. It supports the out-of-band DVB/DAVIC specification to allow cable companies to deliver video and data at the same time. One example of such an integrated service would be the bundled transmission of a soccer match with statistics on the players: subscribers will be able to 'browse and watch' simultaneously.

DiviCom's development team is currently working with a number of manufacturers who are creating DVB/DAVIC compliant set-top boxes, and will announce certification on the completion of interoperability testing. Cable operators will be able to buy the technology by the end of the year.

DiviCom president Tom Lookabaugh told the Daily News: "The technology is finally catching up with the dream. Combined with our MediaView encoder products, InterSect can help our customers expand their revenue streams. These standards-based products allow cable operators to create an infrastructure for delivering both high quality video entertainment and interactive data services to their home subscribers.

"Since 1993, interactive TV services have been promoted in the media, but home subscribers' access has been limited to EPGs and pay-per-view movie purchases," he added. "Internet content has increased dramatically. Set-top boxes are more intelligent. Standards such as DVB and DAVIC define how data will be delivered over two-way Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) connections. Data display formats such as Java and HTML are readily available and HFC networks are expanding.

"InterSect is making our vision a reality."
