Broadband Week for September 14, 1998:
DiviCom Intros Set-Top Controller Milpitas, Calif. -- DiviCom Inc. will introduce an interactive set-top-box controller this week that lets cable operators deliver TCP/IP (transmission-control protocol/Internet protocol) applications like Web browsing, e-mail, stock tickers and electronic program guides.
Called "InterSect," the controller is based on the European DVB/DAVIC (Digital Video Broadcast/Digital Audio-Video Interactive Communications) format, and it will, as such, be introduced at this week's IBC show in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The IP traffic is sent in a 1-megahertz or 2-MHz out-of-band channel over HFC (hybrid fiber-coaxial) systems to home set-tops, executives said. It is that out-of-band signaling path that makes DAVIC different from U.S. interactive standards, DiviCom executives said.
DiviCom officials said in a prepared statement that the company is "actively working with several manufacturers," which will make set-tops anchored by the InterSect system. InterSect will be commercially available for cable-operator use by year-end.
"Combined with our encoder products, InterSect can help our customers to expand their revenue streams," said Tom Lookabaugh, president of DiviCom.
DiviCom does plan to market the InterSect platform to U.S. operators, but it said market momentum from European deployments will accelerate U.S. deployments.
A time line included with DiviCom's press materials shows that the manufacturer plans to prepare an OpenCable demonstration for the Western Show later this year. |
