Megacable Deal Brings Zenith Cable Modems to Mexico
ANAHEIM, Calif., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing to expand the reach of its cable modem technology, Zenith Electronics Corporation (NYSE: ZE) announced today that Megacable, Mexico's second largest cable TV provider, has begun offering high-speed Internet service using Zenith's "HomeWorks Universal" cable modems.
Separately, at the Western Show here today, Zenith announced that the company has begun cable modem shipments to 21st Century Cable TV Inc. as part of the cable operator's plan to bring high-speed broadband Internet access services to more than 40,000 residential and commercial subscribers in the Chicago area.
In October, 21st Century selected Zenith's HomeWorks Universal cable modem technology to supply up high-speed broadband access on 21st Century's state-of-the-art SONET fiber network.
Megacable's launch in Guadalajara marks one of the first uses of cable modem technology in Mexico. Megacable also plans to begin offering Internet access via cable modems by the end of the year in other Mexican cities including Tepic, Veracruz and Jalapa.
"Using Zenith cable modems, Megacable is offering the Internet access service to various types of users -- educational, government, residential and business," said Enrique Yamuni, general manager, Megacable.
"The service is being well received by educational and corporate markets particularly, because it offers high bandwidth, low cost and, of course, high speeds for data transmission and Internet access," he said. "Megacable plans to be one of the most important ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in Mexico with our service called 'MEGARED' for all kinds of users."
Zenith's HomeWorks Universal, which delivers data and other information at speeds up to 4 megabits per second, is designed to offer both RF (radio frequency) and telco return data transmission. Both are being used in the Guadalajara deployment.
G.L. Wright, division vice president and general manager of the Broadband Products Group, Zenith Network Systems division said that, by offering the type of high-speed data transmission provided by a cable modem, Megacable is taking the Mexican cable industry into the future.
"Given the flexibility of the HomeWorks Universal high-speed modem, Megacable is able to serve subscriber areas that have either a two-way or one-way transmission plant, and that's an important advantage for the Mexican market, because it has large areas that have one or the other," Wright said.
