The Vanity Fair article on Bush is so incisive. It gets behind the facade of Bush and analyzes him as a person.
As recently as 9 years ago he had no interest in politics. He just wanted to make money. And tried to with daddy's connections. He lost 371 million and at 40 admitted "I'm all name and no money". Then came the Texas Rangers offer. He always loved baseball and imagined himself someday Baseball Commissioner. When they turned him down only then did he listen to the Texas GOP kingmakers offering him a shot at governor. He didn't havea nything better to do so he went for it. And lo and behold the inner politician came out. But he has never studied or cared much for policy or issues (until before the debates). He is also very competitive with Jeb. Jeb was the golden boy and straight-A student whom his parents believed would be the big politician. GW resented this but did nothing to earn thei respect. In fact he had a drinking problem and was said to be a mean drunk. He had a mouth and when drunk said very hurtful things to people. He was a verbal bully. He may have even abused his wife because she threatened to leave him if he didn't stop. He finally did. Now GW's mother Barbara says "We are amazed at what GW has been able to do". Translation? That they thought Jeb would be the one. And GW loves it. He reportedly even came close to a fist-fight with his dad once. They are not that close. GW resents their making Jeb the favorite son. Neil is a loser. They treated GW like he might be a loser too. And he was the oldest son. My brother's the same way. He has something to prove. mainly to his parents. But deep down only his ego is interested in being president. He would rather not work very hard in life. he would prefer to loaf off at the ranch and collect the rewards his position bestows upon him. They caleld him "the mouth" in school. That is his most potent weapon. And it's why he's doing well in the election. Of issues frankly he just doesn't care.
